Molly makes these lovely & versatile pins all by hand.   One end is "drawn out, " using hammer blows, to a gradual point. She then forms the decorative end -all while the metal is red hot.   This sculptural end keeps the pin from pulling through the shawl once it is in place. To use this pin you work it in and out of the fabric where it crosses at your shoulder,  as illustrated below.
